Now I’m not one to bitch….

Posted by Allison on March 15, 2011

I’m not one to bitch and moan (shut up Carroll, stop laughing) but I don’t want to paint a rose coloured version of what life is like in London.  I mean, I truly love it here and would gladly live in the UK for years to come BUT there are a few, um, issues that I never would have imagined before we moved here.  You see in Germany I was completely prepared for the culture shock. I knew that the language barrier would be a tough thing but since it was the first year overseas I knew that the excitement would carry us through, and it did.  We were there a year and I loved so much of the experience.  I loved walking down the Hauptstrasse more than anything and the food, I LOVED the bread most of all.   Anyway, we move to London and I am thinking that I’ll make friends, get a job, travel the UK and everything will be hunky dory.   So I have had several missteps on the job front but I’m still getting interviews so that is a positive!  I’m making great friends and expanding our families roots in the community.  And here comes the but…..SEVEN MILLION people live in London and not ONE of them knows how to walk on a sidewalk.  Seriously.  For those of you who know me and have ever been to West Edmonton Mall with me you know that I hate walking in crowds of people that have no spacial recognition whatsoever.  The rules of walking are the simple….walk on the RIGHT!  Don’t stop in the middle of a moving crowd, move to the side and don’t cut people off.  Originally I thought wow, maybe it’s because they drive on the other side of the road, so I started walking on the left.  It didn’t help.  Nope, apparently the entire city of London is filled with people who have no desire to walk in a fashion that makes any type of sense.  There is no moving to the side because of an elderly person, there is no deference to age or sex, there is no polite nod when we get in each others way.  Nope.   There is just millions of people walking wherever the hell they want with no regard to how frickin’ annoying they are.  Since they actually have to paint which way people are suppose to look to cross the street, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

Oh before I forget, the primary school had a fancy dress day!  As I said a couple of posts back Mr. Magoo went as Kipper from the Magic Key books but here are a few shots from the school.  If you look closely at the first picture you’ll see his teacher dressed as the big bad wolf!

Most of the kids you could see their faces so I can’t post here but this little one had such a great costume and since you can’t see their face I thought I would share!

I think they painted the directions on the cross walks so the tourists would quit getting run over….bad for tourism…..

Lol that would drive me insane. There I’d not spatial recognition here either. When waiting in line pple stand right next to me. I can’t stand it! Good luck in the job situation 🙂

OMG!!! I was just walking down to St Pancras station and I thought ‘What the hell is wrong with these people?’ I had a guy walk me into a tree – he would NOT share even the tiniest bit of the pavement! I still love London though!
