the mother of invention…

Posted by Allison on June 7, 2010

All my life I wanted a big ass fridge with a drink/ice dispenser.  It was the be all and end all of everything.  Fast forward to living in the land of sausage and our crazy non included kitchen and you’ll see this…

Beautiful right?  See the tall section to the right of the picture?  That’s where the fridge is…and the inside looks like this….

Yep that’s the entire fridge.  For the last bit we had an extra fridge in the basement but we had to give it back, now this is the entire thing.  It’s ‘the German way’ we hear over and over again but every German house I’ve been in has a much bigger fridge (and sometimes a freezer in the basement).  But since our time here is limited we went with the basic.  Fast forward to last week when I had the brilliant idea to make quiche.  Quiche involves a pie shell and pie shells involve ice water.  The measuring bowl that you see in the freezer section (and I use that term VERY loosely) was the only way I had to make ice.

It all worked out in the end.  These no roll pie crust off allrecipes.com are brilliant!  I was feeling so homegrown and crafty in the face of adversity I even attempted to fix Mr. Magoo’s knees with my crazy sewing machine.

Just call me Allie Plain and Tall.

I miss ice and so many other products you take for granted having in US. Soon ice will be back in my life and large frigs!

  2. Never plain, though you are tall….

Well done – I love pie shell! I’ll have to try that recipe.
