I need some walking shoes.

Posted by Allison on August 23, 2009

I have to invest in some really good walking shoes.  I NEED them to be stylish but more importantly I need them to protect my feet if I’m going to be trapsing up and down the street of Salzburg. ( really it’s taken me this long to use that line and I’ve been in Germany for almost TWO weeks and technically that’s not Austria but I can practically SEE it from here)

I remember when E. Ho used to work at this store in southgate they sold amazing walking shoes but my old agers won’t allow me to remember what the hell it was called.  So all you people in blog land, name your favorite walking shoe!  Good quality, price is no object (kidding, price is always a factor but I’m willing to shell out to protect the flat feet god gave me).  Yesterday we spent a half day at the Heidelberg Castle which dates back to 1255 (is that the 11th century or the 13th?  damn you Mr. CULLEN!!!!)  It was a great day and the kids came back exhausted which is always a sign of a good day out.  We were very cultured (except for the dash into Burger King when we realised it was 6:30 and we hadn’t fed the kids)

The view from the top of the castle is breathtaking.

I’m too lazy to reimport so turn your head sideways for this one, it’s worth it.

When I was little and my mother brought snacks on our days out, I used to be mortified.  Now I’m the mom and I’m not paying 5 Euro for a sandwich for a 6 year old so this is where we ate our string cheese (yippee to the American PX ) and juice boxes…

Seriously imagine how much more charming I’d be if I spent my school field trips going here instead of the Forestry Farm and the Western Development museum!

This is outside the main Heidelberg station.  Every bike imaginable is there.  And there are little kids to Granny’s riding everywhere.  I can’t wait for my bike to get here!

  1. I have a couple of kinds – merrells are THE best [I’ve done a lot of my half marathon training in them] and my mom wears them exclusively because of her back issues. the other pair that I have are “rieker”…sounds german…love them too!

Any shoes made by KEEN. They are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned.

I agree with Cori.. Merrells are amazing. I had some sandals I bought for walking when I went to Indonesia and that was in 95… I still have the sandals and they are still comfy. Not so stylish anymore.. but comfy. I know you will laugh at me but I find my crocs crazy comfy.. but I hate shoes. and they are the closest thing to non shoes I can find!

I’ll take a look at the Merrells. They have some cute styles. I will tell you that if Crocs were the last shoes on earth. “I would cut off my feet” to quote Stacey London. I know, I know, they are super comfortable…whatever. I think the are indicative with all that is wrong in the world today. Ok, maybe that’s a bit harsh, I just hate seeing men wearing bright orange plastic shoes on their feet. Once in a moment of weakness I almost bought a pair, but I couldn’t do it. I will admit that I like Ugg boots though. (hangs head in shame)

Did you do a tour? We had our narotic child with us , so we want to go back and do the tour later. It’s gorgeous though.

2 great walking shoes that I reccomend to my patients are Ecco and Mephisto. Some find Mephisto too wide or too heavy, but most love them. Ecco makes shoes that are typically lighter and more stylish (although not high fashion). Both offer good support and can accomodate an orthotic if you use one.

Hi there. If you want Merrills or the most to the other brands, you can get them at the Engelhorn Sport in Mannheim.

Glad that you enjoyed the Heidelberg Castle. It is one of my favorite views of the city.
