I kissed a Squirrel and I liked it.

Posted by Allison on August 21, 2008

I am NOT a prude. I’m a pretty liberal actually. I’m a LOT more liberal than most people I know. But as I get older I find that I’m not as “water off a ducks back-ish” as I used to be….I’m all for everyone living their own life, I abhor censorship, I embrace things that the general public finds ‘different’. I live in Alberta and I am a card-carrying member of the home-birthin’, cloth diaperin’, believer in the rights of all individuals to marry….this isn’t the norm. I swear in front of my children, I WANT them to grow up to be witty, different INDIVIDUALS….and it doesn’t concern me in the least if they are straight, gay or conservatives (okay that last one would embarrass me a little) I want them to live passionately, love themselves and their planet and be happy. So it behooves me to print this but the other day in Safeway I got embarrassed. Not by a screaming 5 year old or a tantrum oh no, but by a song. I got embarrassed because my nine year old daughter was singing at the top of her lungs the newest hit song amongst the preteen set. Katy Perry’s “I kissed a girl and I liked it”. I LOVED this song when I first heard it, I sing it all the time when I’m in the car I think it’s ‘cute’. I can see it’s probably a big hit it the bars this summer.

I would have prefered the version Shelly heard…

Katie’s favorite song too… especially about the cherry chapstick verse… I was mortified when she sang it at the swim club the other day…

The Diva, at the tender age of six, liked to belt out that Tracy Bonham song, Mother Mother, at the grocery store. The lyric is all about a girl checking in, telling her mom that she fine, when she really isn’t…here is a snippet of the chorus that Tracy basically screams in the song:

    “I’m hungry, I’m dirty, Everything’s fine…”

Man — I saw this on “So You Think You Can Dance” (don’t judge) and I love the song, but, yeah… it seems a little sophist-o-cated for the crowd it seems to have reached.
